Nasreen Akhter • October 22, 2026

Are you a researcher, an artist or a tech expert thinking about moving to the UK? The Global Talent visa could be a good fit. You don't need a job offer. You don't need an employer to sponsor you. And it can lead to settling in the UK in as little as 3 years.

This guide explains who can apply, how the two stages work, what it costs and what you can do once you arrive. It reflects the rules as they stand in October 2026. It covers the Global Talent visa only, not other UK routes such as the High Potential Individual or Innovator Founder visas. It is general information, not legal advice on your own situation.

Key points

• The Global Talent visa is for leaders, or future leaders, in academia and research, arts and culture, or digital technology.

Which one you apply under matters. It changes the evidence you need and how soon you can settle.

Which route fits you?

If this sounds like you You would usually apply
Your work is already recognised by experts and the press in more than one country As exceptional talent
You are earlier in your career, with a growing track record As exceptional promise
You have an eligible academic job, fellowship or funded research role Through an academic fast track route
You have personally won a prize on the approved list Through the prize route, with no endorsement

Global Talent visa or Skilled Worker visa?

Many people compare the two. The big difference is freedom. A Skilled Worker visa ties you to one employer. A Global Talent visa does not.

Global Talent visa Skilled Worker visa
Job offer needed? No Yes
Employer sponsor needed? No Yes, a licensed sponsor
Minimum salary? No Yes, in most cases
English test to apply? No Yes
Change jobs freely? Yes Only with a new sponsor
Work for yourself? Yes No

Because it gives you so much freedom, the bar is high. You need strong proof that experts in your field rate your work.

Who can apply for a Global Talent visa?

You can apply if you work in one of three fields.

Academia and research

This includes science, medicine, engineering, humanities and social sciences.

Arts and culture

This includes music, theatre, dance, literature, visual arts, architecture, fashion, and film and television.

Digital technology

This includes technical roles such as software developer, engineer or data scientist. Business roles in tech companies count too, such as product, commercial or investment roles. Areas include artificial intelligence, cyber security and fintech.

Global Talent visa endorsement: who endorses you?

For most people, the first step is an endorsement. This is a decision by an expert body, trusted by the Home Office, that you meet the standard for your field. Each field has its own body.

Your field Who endorses you
Science and medicine The Royal Society
Engineering The Royal Academy of Engineering
Humanities and social sciences The British Academy
Research roles linked to approved funders UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)
Arts and culture, including architecture, fashion, and film and TV Arts Council England
Digital technology Tech Nation

Global Talent visa requirements by field

The main Global Talent visa requirement is proof that experts rate your work, through an endorsement or an approved prize. Each endorsing body sets its own rules. Here is what each one looks for, in plain terms.

Arts and culture

Your work should be recognised outside your home country. It should have been published, performed, shown or produced professionally.

• Exceptional talent: you have worked professionally in your field in the last 5 years. You normally have a strong track record in at least 2 countries.

• Exceptional promise: you are earlier in your career. You normally have at least 3 years of professional experience and a growing track record in at least 1 country.

You will usually need a CV, letters of recommendation and proof of what you have achieved, such as reviews, awards or press coverage.

Digital technology

You need to show you have been recognised as a leader, or a likely future leader, in digital technology in the last 5 years.

• Exceptional talent: you are already seen as a leader in tech.

• Exceptional promise: you are earlier in your tech career, usually with less than 5 years in the sector. You may have worked longer in another field.

Your evidence might show new ideas you brought to a product, a big impact on a tech company, work that helped the wider tech sector, or academic research. Tech Nation usually decides within 5 to 8 weeks.

Academia and research

There is no minimum number of years. There are four main ways to qualify:

1. You have been offered an eligible academic or research job at a UK university or research institute.

2. You hold an eligible fellowship, or have held one in the last 5 years.

3. You have an eligible research role funded by an approved funder (the UKRI route).

4. Peer review: experts look at your track record. This is for active researchers with a PhD or similar research experience.

The first three are known as fast track routes. Under peer review, exceptional promise is for people at an early stage of their research career. For exceptional talent, the panel looks at things like major research funding you have won in the last 10 years, and whether you are already seen as a leader.

Can you skip the endorsement? The prize route

Yes, if you have personally won a prize on the Home Office's approved list. Examples include the Booker Prize, the Pritzker Prize, the Turing Award, the Fields Medal, some Nobel Prizes and the BFC Foundation Award.

You must be the named winner. Other awards from the same organisations don't count. On this route you pay the full £766 when you apply for the visa.

How to apply for a Global Talent visa

For most people there are two stages: endorsement, then the visa itself.

1. Check your route. Read the guidance from the endorsing body for your field.

2. Gather your evidence. This usually means a CV, a personal statement, letters of recommendation and proof of your achievements.

3. Apply for endorsement online using the Global Talent stage 1 form on GOV.UK and pay £561.

4. Get your decision. If you are endorsed, you will get an endorsement letter.

5. Apply for the visa within 3 months of your endorsement. Pay £205 plus the health surcharge.

6. Prove your identity, either with the UK Immigration: ID Check app or at an appointment where your fingerprints and photo are taken.

7. Get your visa decision. If you are successful, you will get an eVisa, a digital record of your immigration status, rather than a physical card.

What you need for the visa stage

• an endorsement that is still valid and has not been withdrawn

• a valid passport or other document showing who you are and your nationality

• a tuberculosis (TB) test certificate, if you are applying from a country where one is needed

• written permission from the funder, if a government or international scholarship agency paid for your UK course and living costs in the last 12 months

• certified translations of any documents that are not in English or Welsh

How long does a Global Talent visa take?

How long a Global Talent visa takes depends on your endorsing body. For a Tech Nation applicant it is roughly 8 to 16 weeks in total: 5 to 8 weeks for endorsement, then 3 to 8 weeks for the visa.

• Endorsement: this depends on the body. Tech Nation says 5 to 8 weeks.

• Visa, applying from outside the UK: usually 3 weeks.

• Visa, applying from inside the UK: usually 8 weeks.

You may be able to pay for a faster decision. If you are outside the UK, you can apply up to 3 months before you plan to travel.

How much does a Global Talent visa cost?

A Global Talent visa costs £766 per person to apply, according to gov.uk in October 2026. On top of that, each adult pays the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 for every year of the visa, and each child under 18 pays £776 a year.

What you pay for Cost
Endorsement application £561
Visa application £205
Total application fee (main applicant) £766
Each partner or child £766
Immigration Health Surcharge £1,035 per adult, per year (£776 per child under 18)

The Immigration Health Surcharge lets you use the NHS. You pay it up front for the whole length of your visa. For a 5-year visa, one person pays £5,175 in surcharge. Add the £766 fee and the total is £5,941, before any legal fees. For a couple with one child on a 5-year visa, the surcharge comes to £14,230 (£5,175 for each adult and £3,880 for the child). Add £2,298 in fees (£766 × 3) and the total is £16,528, before any legal fees.

These are the gov.uk figures as at October 2026. Fees change from time to time, so check before you apply.

What you can and can't do on the visa

You can:

• work for an employer, work for yourself or run your own company

• change jobs without asking the Home Office

• do voluntary work

• study, though some subjects need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate first

• travel in and out of the UK

• bring your partner and children

You can't:

• claim most benefits (this is called having no access to public funds)

• work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach

You are free to take any job. But to settle early, you will usually need to show you have earned money in the field you were endorsed for. Keep this in mind when you plan your work.

Can you bring your partner and children (dependants)?

Yes. Your partner and your children under 18 can apply as your dependants. Each one pays £766 plus the health surcharge (£1,035 a year for a partner and £776 a year for each child under 18). Your partner can work and study in the UK too.

Partners usually need 5 years in the UK before they can settle, even if you settle after 3.

Global Talent visa extension

Each visa lasts up to 5 years. There is no overall limit. You can extend as many times as you need, for between 1 and 5 years each time, as long as you still meet the rules. You will need to show you have earned money in the UK in the field you were endorsed for.

Can you switch from another UK visa?

Often, yes. For example, you can switch from a Skilled Worker visa.

You can't switch if you are in the UK as a visitor, short-term student, seasonal worker, domestic worker in a private household or parent of a child student. If you are on a Student visa, you usually need to finish your course first. PhD students can switch once they have done at least 24 months of full-time study.

Global Talent visa ILR: when can you settle?

Global Talent visa holders can apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) after 3 years if they were endorsed by an academic body, endorsed as exceptional talent, or came through the prize route. Exceptional promise applicants in arts or tech wait 5 years. ILR, also called settlement, means you can live in the UK with no time limit.

Your route Time before you can apply for ILR
Endorsed by the Royal Society, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering or UKRI 3 years
Exceptional talent (Arts Council England or Tech Nation) 3 years
Prize route 3 years
Exceptional promise (Arts Council England or Tech Nation) 5 years

So for academics and researchers, it is 3 years whether you were endorsed for talent or for promise. You can usually apply up to 28 days before you reach the 3-year or 5-year point.

To settle, you will also usually need to:

• not have spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period

• show you have earned money in the UK in your endorsed field during your last visa

• pass the Life in the UK test

• prove your English at B1 level. This rises to B2 for applications made on or after 26 March 2027.

Changes to settlement are on the way

The Home Office has proposed longer waits before most people can settle. This plan is called earned settlement. As at October 2026, how it will affect Global Talent visa holders is not yet final. Check the latest rules before you plan around a date, or ask us.

Tips for a strong application and personal statement

• Pick the right category. If your evidence fits exceptional promise better, apply on that basis.

• Make your personal statement about impact. Don't just list jobs. Say what you did, who it helped and how others have recognised it.

• Choose your letter writers with care. They should know your work well and be respected in your field. Ask them to give real examples.

• Link each piece of evidence to a criterion. Label it clearly so the assessor can see why it is there.

• Read the latest guidance. Each endorsing body has its own rules on page limits and letters.
