Deputyship and the Court of Protection
If someone can no longer make decisions about their money and no Lasting Power of Attorney was ever signed, the family cannot simply step in. An application to the Court of Protection is needed to appoint a deputy.
We see this most often once a parent moves into residential care and Brent begins a financial assessment. Brent charges the full cost of care where income, savings or assets exceed £23,250, and takes income plus capital above £14,250 into account below that, leaving a personal expenses allowance of £30.65 a week (Brent Council). Somebody has to have legal authority to hand over that financial information, and if nobody does, the assessment stalls. How do I apply for probate in Wembley?
There is no probate office in Wembley and no local probate registry anywhere in London. Probate applications for the whole of England and Wales are handled centrally by HM Courts and Tribunals Service. What is local is registering the death, and Brent’s register office happens to be in Wembley itself.

• Register the death at Brent Register Office, Brent Civic Centre, Engineers Way, Wembley HA9 0FJ, within 5 days. Appointments are required and can be booked online or on 020 8937 1010. Book only once you have been told that the Medical Cause of Death Certificate, or the coroner’s paperwork, has reached the register office. Death certificates cost £12.50 each, and it is worth ordering several, because banks and pension providers usually each want one.
• Use Tell Us Once. The registrar gives you a reference number that lets you notify the council, HMRC, the Department for Work and Pensions, the DVLA and the Passport Office in one go through GOV.UK.
• Sort out the council tax. Brent grants an exemption on an empty property until probate is granted and for up to 6 months after that, after which the estate pays the full charge.

Getting to our Harrow office from Wembley
Our office is at Harrow Business Centre, 429 to 433 Pinner Road, Harrow HA1 4HN, about 5 minutes’ walk from North Harrow station.
The three nearest stations to Wembley town centre are Wembley Central (Bakerloo line, Lioness line and Southern, zone 4), Wembley Stadium (Chiltern Railways, zone 4) and North Wembley (Bakerloo and Lioness lines, zone 4).
From Wembley Park, the Metropolitan line runs straight to North Harrow in 10 minutes with no changes, and with the walk at this end the whole journey is about 18 minutes. From Wembley Central, allow about 22 minutes by train to Harrow and Wealdstone and then the H9 bus. From an address that is not next to a station, allow 25 to 40 minutes door to door.
