Key Areas of Work

Private client services help you plan for the future and protect the people who matter most. Whether you want to make a Will, put a lasting Power of Attorney in place, plan for inheritance tax, deal with the estate of someone who has died, or help a loved one who has lost mental capacity, our solicitors can guide you through the process.

What private client law covers

Private client law covers the legal work individuals need to plan for the future and to manage what happens after a death or a loss of mental capacity. It includes wills, trusts, estate planning, lasting powers of attorney, probate and estate administration, Court of Protection matters and inheritance tax planning, along with support for elderly and vulnerable clients.

In plain terms, a private client solicitor looks after you and your family rather than a business. The work usually involves your home, your savings, your wishes for the people you leave behind, or the care of someone who can no longer decide things for themselves.

Ash Hill Solicitors Ltd is a private client firm first and foremost. It is the heart of what we do from our office on Pinner Road in North Harrow, led by our principal solicitor Nasreen Akhter.

Which private client service do you need?

  • "I need to make a will, or update one."

Your first will, a will after marriage, divorce or a new child, or a review of one made years ago. Our wills solicitors can help.

  • "I want to protect assets and plan how my estate passes on."

Trusts, lifetime gifts and inheritance tax planning for you and your beneficiaries. See trusts and estate planning.

  • "I want to choose who makes decisions for me if I ever can't."

A lasting power of attorney lets you appoint someone you trust before it is needed. See lasting power of attorney.

  • "Someone has died and I don't know what to do next."

If you are an executor or the closest family member, we can obtain the grant of probate and deal with the estate administration for you. See probate and estate administration.

  • "I've been left out of a will, or I'm worried about how an estate is being handled."

Claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, will validity concerns and executor disputes. See contentious probate.

  • "A loved one has lost mental capacity and there's no power of attorney."

The Court of Protection can appoint someone to act, under the framework of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. See Court of Protection.

  • "I need ongoing legal authority to manage a family member's affairs."

A deputyship gives you that authority, with continuing duties we can guide you through. See deputyship.

  • "I'm arranging legal affairs for an elderly parent or relative."

Later life planning handled patiently, including home, hospital and care home visits. See elderly client care.

What private client work costs

Costs are made clear from the outset, in writing, before you decide to go ahead. There are no hidden charges and no surprises partway through.

What moves the costs up is complexity, for example, an estate with several properties, missing paperwork or a dispute between family members. Whenever the scope changes, you get an updated estimate before more work is done.

Private client questions we're asked most

  • What does a private client solicitor actually do?

A private client solicitor advises individuals and families rather than businesses. The work covers wills, trusts, estate planning, lasting powers of attorney, probate and estate administration, Court of Protection applications and inheritance tax planning. In short, planning for the future, and dealing with what happens when someone dies or loses mental capacity.

  • Do I actually need a solicitor, or can I do this myself?

Some things can be done yourself through gov.uk, and if that is right for you, we will say so in the free chat. A solicitor earns their fee where there is property, tax, a blended family, a dispute, or any doubt about capacity, because mistakes in this area tend to surface only after it is too late to fix them.

  • How much will it cost, and how do you charge?

Wills and lasting powers of attorney are fixed fee. Probate is fixed fee or hourly depending on the estate. Either way, you receive a written estimate before any work begins, and an updated one if the scope changes. Our current figures are on the fees page.

  • Can everything be handled remotely, or do I have to come in?

Most matters can be dealt with entirely by phone or video, and we verify identity remotely in line with Law Society guidance. Some clients prefer to come in, and some documents are easier to deal with in person, but distance alone is rarely a barrier.

  • How quickly can I get an appointment?

We keep the diary flexible, and we treat bereavement and capacity emergencies with urgency. Availability varies week to week, so the honest answer is to call 0208 515 2790 and we will tell you exactly when we can see you.

  • Who will actually handle my matter?

The solicitor you meet at the start. As a small firm we do not pass files between departments, so you have one named person, their direct contact details, and continuity from first meeting to conclusion.

  • Do you visit people at home or in hospital?

Yes. We visit clients at home, in hospital, in hospices and in care homes across Harrow and the surrounding areas. This matters most for wills and lasting powers of attorney, where waiting is often not an option.

  • Do you help clients outside Harrow?

Yes. Most of our clients are in Harrow and North West London, but we act for clients across London and further afield. Remote appointments and remote ID checks mean where you live rarely limits what we can do.
